It sounds like you are referring to your Miranda rights- remain silent etc.. The way this works is that when you are arrested, if they fail to read you your rights, they can't use any statements you make after you we're arrested against you. It doesn't invalidate the arrest, but a good lawyer will be able to use it to keep certain evidence from being admitted against you.
