A: Of Course! The child is yours, isn't it? Why would you NOT want to support your own child!? I know, I know...you're going to say that the money you pay the other parent is just going to buy beer or marijuana or cigarettes or whatever. Well, what is YOUR money going to? If the other person is a bad parent, then YOU go for custody. But until your parental rights are terminated, you must pay child support. Oh, and don't even think about trying to 'give up' your parental rights. Can't do it unless there is somebody there who wants to adopt the child in your place. I've been pretty hard on you here, and there are probably things about your situation that you didn't put in your question. You should consult your family attorney about this matter. If you don't have an attorney already, I'll be happy to speak with you about this matter. While I have discussed the general provisions of the law, there are some exceptions. So you shouldn't rely on this note as a legal opinion. If you click on my name it will take you to my contact page. There you can find information on how to contact me, either by phone or by email. I don't charge for the first 30 minutes of an initial consultation.
