Woonsocket, RI asked in Family Law for Rhode Island

Q: What should I do? Could I be adopted by someone near me so I can stay in the same school? Please help?

Hello. I am 15 years old and I live with my mom. My parents and divorced and I see my dad every other weekend. I don't want to live with my mom because of many reasons. For example, I never get to eat dinner so I get no nutrition in me, she mentally abuses me as in calling me name and verbally being mean to me. She tells me how much she hates me and doesn't want me around. And she is always yelling and nothing makes her happy. She is always miserable. I think he needs to be put on medicine or something because she is crazy. She also is paranoid about everything. It is a very unfit home for me and I don't want to live with her. My step dad also lives with us and me and him don't get along. Also my two half-brothers live her they and 7 and 5 and we don't get along either. I am not allowed out of my room because no one likes me and I feel unwanted. I would love to move to my dads because things are completely different there but I don't want to move to MA and go to a new school.

A: Talk to your DAD. He will likely do well to make an appointment with a family court attorney here in RI. Massachusetts isn't so bad and now that you are 15, the court will take your wishes into consideration. This might be best to plan so that you don't have to change schools in the middle of the year. Getting a case started now might be a good idea with an eye toward making your move in the summer.
