A: ORC 2945.72 is not something you ask for. It is a statute describing reasons the speedy trial clock may be tolled. The state is required to bring the accused to trial within a certain period of time following formal charging. That period of time may be tolled (which means the clock may be paused) for any of the reasons listed in the statute.

So, for example, in a felony case, if the accused does not waive (give up) his or her right to a speedy trial. The prosecution must bring him or her to trial within 270 days. However, if the accused were released on bond and then disappeared, the clock would be paused until he or she turned up again under 2945.72(D), which allows for time to be extended during "any period of delay occasioned by the neglect or improper act of the accused," running off being an improper act.

What is it your fiance is trying to accomplish? Is he or she facing charges in multiple jurisdictions and unable to make it to court in one do to being in custody in another? Is he or she simply looking for some extra time to find a lawyer prior to a hearing?
