San Diego, CA asked in Civil Rights for California

Q: I have a question regarding the right to refuse service. Can you be refused from a store without an explanation.?

I went to my local family dollar and the assistant manager rudely told me " um excuse me your not allowed in here. " I asked her why.? She just said "I have the right to refuse anyone I want too." So I asked for her name nd corporate numbers. And haven't gotten any reply yet. I have heard that this is not the first time they've done this to someone. The manger treated me like a criminal when I have done nothing wrong. She embarrassed me in front of other customers. I need advice on to where I can take these matters, since corporate isn't cooperating. I also have this on camera.

A: A private party can refuse anyone they want admission so what the asst manager did is not technically wrong. However, I would doubt the asst manager knew the precise rules on who she can and can't exclude. For example, if she excluded all Hispanic people because of their race, that would clearly not be allowed.

I'd escalate it through Family Dollar corporate. Consult their website and see if you can go above your local store. The fact you have the entire incident on camera can help as well. Mention that and corporate might get back to you really quickly.
