Springfield, OH asked in Divorce for Ohio

Q: how is my husband able to get legal aid help but i can't he makes so much more money than i do.

I contacted legal aid due to the fact my husband is verbally abusive and wants a dissolution but I don't but I can't take the abuse anymore. He had papers drawn up but I took them to a free consultation with a lawyer who said they were not legal papers in Ohio. On the papers it said he had no job or money coming in to get help from legal aid. Truth is he makes about $2,000 a month bring home. I barely make $800 sometimes less and they will not help me due to the fact he has talked to them. He is a liar and manipulator and can get what he wants. I just want a stress free home again. I just need some help getting what I deserve. He has a special female friend he gave a ring to and hangs out with and took a picture with. He had said he is going to screw me over everywhere there is to screw me. Is there any other place or lawyer that can help me with this that won't make me go bankrupt?

A: This is not an unfamiliar tactic. Some folks go to get a divorce lawyer and find out half the lawyers in the city have talked to their spouse and their spouse about it and therefore cannot represent them. Legal Aid isn't turning you down over money. They are turning you down because it creates a conflict of interest when their lawyers work for both sides. Contact your local bar association to see if they have a list of attorneys willing to work at a reduced rate. Even still, don't expect it to be cheap.
