Pensacola, FL asked in Child Custody for Florida

Q: What rights do I have with Power of Attorney on behalf of my granddaughter who has lived with me for a year?

The mother is incarcerated and the father has filed for full custody. They were never married. He abandoned them to live with someone else and had a child and left them. I am the main caregiver/provider for the child. I get no financial help from him and I am getting food stamps for her. He feels that I am responsible for supporting her while she is with me. We are in the process of getting her enrolled in an all day pre-k school. He does not want me to have rights with power of attorney because he doesn"t want to pay child support. He had no intentions of getting her in school this year.He said the living arrangements will be the same but that she might stay with me a few nights a week but will still have to bring her here on his other work days. I will be keeping her through the week while he works and he will see her on his 2 days off. He has not supplied her with diapers[ he says she's "too grown" to have diapers, yet she needs them at night] or other necessities.

A: Don't let him browbeat you. This needs to be decided by the court. Contact an attorney who deals with family law matters.
