Asked in Probate for North Carolina

Q: My father and I did not stay in touch. Just learned of his passing and was told by funeral home he had no children.

To make a long story short, my parents were married briefly. I had no contact with my father until age 18. We didn't stay in touch much and the last time I spoke with him was 10 years ago. My stepmother died last year and my brother (his only other child) died in 2014. When I saw the obituary (he resided in NC) I called the funeral home to find out if it was indeed the obituary of my father. It was, but they told me he had no children, because obviously he didn't mention me. I'm not sure if they believe me. So, how can I obtain any information? I think he has a lawyer, but I don't know who. I do not believe he has any other family besides some nieces and nephews. I don't know if his sister is still living. The funeral home could not give me any information and I live abroad. Thank you for your time.

A: I assume you are asking because of possible inheritance. If so, based on your description you may likely be first in line to inherit everything - if he doesn't have a will. If he does have a will and you aren't in it you could get nothing (assuming there is anything to get). Likely the best place to start is with his lawyer to see who the executor of his estate is and review the will (if there is one).
