Jupiter, FL asked in Employment Law for Florida

Q: Can I be fired because my wife did not move to FL immediately after I took a job?

I took a job and agreed to move to Florida. I had a one year relocation package, but did not use it. After 7 months, my wife was offered a nice bonus to stay in her job for 2 years and accepted. She plans to travel down on weekends during that time. My employer is demanding I resign or be fired because she did not move immediately. I am an at will employee. Can they force me to resign or fire me if I do not? How can they fire me because she is not moving as quickly as we verbally agreed she would? If my wife and I can manage the back and forth for 2 years, why is that my employer's business?

A: Did the fact that you are married have anything to do with your being hired? It doesn't seem that where your wife is, or indeed whether you have a wife, is any of their business. But, on the other hand, if as you say you are "an at will employee", they don't need any reason to fire you. I'm thinking there's something they aren't telling you.
