Arlington, VA asked in Landlord - Tenant for Maryland

Q: Can a landlord force a tenant to automatically renew their lease if they did not sign a designated section agreeing?

According to the law on automatic lease renewal, the tenants must sign a designated spot specifically agreeing to the automatic lease renewal ONLY in order to be forced to uphold that provision. My friend's lease has four tenants on it, yet only two signed right next to this renewal provision, not including my friend. However, everyone signed the whole lease overall. Does that still count as agreeing to the renewal provision? Please read the statute on this so you can tell me if I understand the wording of it.

A: For an automatic renewal to occur, the tenant must specifically sign that provision of the lease. Otherwise, they can't be bound by it.
