Q: my daughter is 17 and has a 2 year old child she has no job and lives with me.

the father of the child has severe mental illness and is unfit to parent her how do I get guardianship of my grandchild?

A: If you want to formally pursue guardianship, you will need court approval. From your facts it appears you may have a basis to pursue the claim without parental consent. If you can gain consent from BOTH parents, the process will be significantly easier. You may want to contact a family law attorney for assistance. If you wish to proceed pro se (w/o an attorney), your local courthouse has information.
