New York, NY asked in Landlord - Tenant for New York

Q: I have been without gas/ heat in my building for 2 months. Have reported it to the city inspector & council w/ no solve

Gas has been out for 2 months. Started with no working stove for 1 month, replaced with an electric one. Heating is out in whole building. We were given tiny space heaters that are a fire hazard and also cause the power to go out. The apartment was 40 degrees this morning and is pretty much uninhabitable. We have reported the landlord to the city and he has been cited (due to an illegal gas plumbing hookup the gas company turned off the service). My last resort was not paying the rent this month (which is over $7k, this is not a budget apartment), but no progress has been made. There are 3 other units in the building that also went this route. I don't know what to do to make progress. Should I hire a lawyer? Try to break the lease? I am worried he will try to keep my security deposit even if I've done nothing wrong.

A: If you are in New York City, the Emergency Repair office of HPD should restore heat and bill the landlord. Call HPD emergency line.
