Q: My husband's grandmother owes $50K+ in back property tax. What happens with the house and taxes owed when she passes?

A: Well typically the house gets sold and the taxes get paid off the top of the sales proceeds. I don't know if there is a way to keep the house without paying the taxes. You will have to consult with the county that levied the taxes as to other possible ways to deal with the taxes, other than paying them off. If the heirs want to keep the house they could borrow money and pay off the taxes. I don't know if there is a way to continue to carry the deferred tax lien if there is an elderly or disabled heir that wants to continue to live in the house. There might be. You would have to ask the tax collector.
