Clearwater, FL asked in Bankruptcy for Florida

Q: I was discharged from bankruptcy in May, 2016 and am still unable to get statements and access online for my mortgage.

I have faxed and emailed the discharge but they still need additional info. My attorney retired last year so I had to email the loan company that I am no longer being represented by an attorney as they requested but then told that wasn't enough. What else can I do to resolve this. I need my 1098 to do my taxes.

A: Since you are unable to get a 1098 form from your mortgage company, you can request the information from the IRS for free. The IRS keeps 1098 information received for your Social Security number and can send you a transcript that contains all the information you need to report the deduction. Download Form 4506-T from the IRS website to request your 1098. When you complete the form, check the box on line 8 and write the tax year for which you need the form on line 9. A mailing address and fax number for you to send the form is included in the 4506-T instructions. If you make a mistake on the form do not cross it out and correct it. Fill out a new form. Any form with corrections will be rejected. Because the mortgage company is not sending you statements you should request a payment history once a year to confirm they have received all of your payments.
