Woodridge, IL asked in Traffic Tickets for Illinois

Q: Illinois Moving Violation question. What does it mean to "avoid a conviction" with court supervision?

I received a ticket yesterday for driving onto a flat median to get into the left hand turning lane early. It is my first ticket in 16 years. I was told I would be given court supervision and if i paid the fine and didn't get a ticket during the probationary period, I would 'avoid a conviction' and the ticket would be removed from my record so that I don't accumulate points. My question is: does this completely remove the ticket from my records? If an Illinois police officer pulled me over a year from now and checked my records, would he/she see this ticket in the system? If he/she asked me when I received my last ticket, can I still say 16 years ago without lying?

A: If you receive court supervision, the offense would not appear on your public driving record, which is available to the "public", including insurance companies. The supervision would only appear on your court purposes driving record, which is only available to you, your attorney, law enforcement, and courts. If you are asked when you received your last conviction, you could say 16 years ago, but not if you are asked when you received your last ticket.
