Chicago, IL asked in Animal / Dog Law for Colorado

Q: Animal control took my dogs The office claims they are Pitt bulls and aggressive. How do I get them back?

My dogs got out the backyard and a Neightbor reported them being aggresive and that they were Pitt bulls. I have all the paper work that says they are not Pitt bulls. When the office took them they showed no type of aggression. I have do it next week and I want to know how do I get my dogs back?what should I expect at court?

A: If the locality has specific rules for pitbulls the paperwork showing there are not pitbulls will be helpful. For the "aggressive behavior" the issue turns mostly on the creditability of the neighbor versus other witnesses (and other documentary evidence) that tends to show that the dogs do not normally exhibit aggressive behavior to others.

For the procedures, you should have received documentation when the dogs were taken to appeal the decision.
