Hoboken, NJ asked in Criminal Law for New Jersey

Q: Hello, What actions can I take if someone hacked into my bank account and did unauthorized tranaction?

LAst week I recieved a text from my bank that a transacion had been made for $197. I didn't make any transactions for this amount. I looked at my bank account and saw the transaction was from PAypal. I called my bank and they refunded the money the same day.I also called PAypal and told me the name of the person who made this tranaction. I never heard of this person. Paypal said they the person in question put my bank account number into their personal Paypal account. I never been a victim of fraud and it's very unsettling.I don't know what legal actions I should and could take when it comes to a matter like this. ANy advice will be helpful. Also, if you can help me understand how a person can get access to my personal banking info.I am afraid they might have other personal info like my social security number etc. What should I do?

Thanks!

A: If you know the name and information of this person you should report them to the police immediately. Bring with you any proof that you have such as emails etc. Lastly you should lock down your credit and subscribe to a credit monitoring company. Unfortunately our government allows these people to exist and has for years by allowing Bitcoins etc. Maybe Trump will change this, as he has talked about hacking, but probably not.
