Bartlett, IL asked in Traffic Tickets for Illinois

Q: Am I eligible for court supervision?

I'm 23 and I got my 1st speeding ticket, and the officer said that I was driving 91 on the 55 limit which put me 35 and over the speed limit. He said i'll receive a mandatory court date in the mail and he put $1500 on the fine. Am I still eligible for the court supervision considering this is my first speeding ticket? Or do I need a lawyer? The speed limit however was 60 which would put me 25 mph and over but I didn't argue with the officer because I was scared.

A: I would be beneficial to retain an attorney. Speeding 35 or more over the limit is a Class A misdemeanor. The maximum penalty is 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine plus court costs. While the maximum penalty is extremely unlikely, you want to do everything necessary to avoid a criminal conviction on your record. You may be eligible for court supervision, but there are no guarantees. The goal is to keep this offense off of your public record and minimize the consequences. The speed limit issue is one that may need to be addressed with the prosecutor in court. Contact an attorney directly to discuss the specifics of your case and your options.

A: Even if the speed limit is 60, it is still a class B misdemeanor.

You should hire a traffic attorney. Those attorneys can work on the best outcome for you.

You don't want a criminal conviction on your record.
