Bethesda, MD asked in Immigration Law for Maryland

Q: An H1-B visa holder, my employer may sponsor me for a green card. Would that prevent me from travelling abroad?

I am a French national currently working in the US under an H1-B visa (valid until 2019). My employer is considering to sponsor my green card application. However, my work may request international travel from time to time.

I would like to know if applying for a green card would prevent me from travelling abroad under my H1-B.

Thank you in advance for your help

A: As long a person maintain an H-1B visa, being sponsored for a green card is not an obstacle to travelling outside the US and re-entering the US in H-1B status.

A: As an LPR you can obtain previous approval to re enter the USA. Also you may qualify for what is called commuter status.
