Asked in Child Custody and Family Law for Georgia

Q: I will be the father of a child born out of wedlock. The mother is married. I have very little money for legal fees.

I work 2 part time jobs and have a home but it is in need of renovations to be suitable for a child, so I have little money for legal fees. I also have to consider the medical bills that I'm not insured for if I can give the child my last name. My child deserves to know me but i dont know if I can be paying legal fees and still be able to provide for my child. I need to know how to obtain my rights and how much it might cost. Please help!!!

A: You can file for legitimation in the county where the child is born. You can do it without an attorney, but it is going to be difficult. There are forms online you can use. These are the Fulton forms. If she lives in another county, you can just cross out Fulton and put the correct county. Otherwise, the forms are the same. https://www.fultoncourt.org/family/family-packets.php#legitimation
