Jupiter, FL asked in Employment Law for Florida

Q: Is this legal? What are my options?

I work in FL for an international corp. as a non-exempt hourly employee. My issue is regarding cash deposits. We are required on the nights we have a closing shift to make cash deposits to a bank down the street AFTER clocking out. My concern is not only being made to work off the clock, but having to carry what sometimes amounts to >$1,000 cash to a dark location between 9:15-9:30pm unarmed/unprotected in any way. I feel vulnerable to mugging. The only alternate I've been given is to arrive early in the morning to clock in/pick up the deposit, drive to the bank, and back before opening the store during a morning shift. This is not much safer & I dont have a vehicle. I rely on a friend to drop/pick me up from work. I wasnt aware when I took the position that I would require a vehicle for work purposes. Essentially i have no choice but to have myself and my friend make this nightly deposit. Ive recently been tasked with picking up deposit slips before work as well.

A: I don't see any viation of law for the deposit requirement. But if doing it offf the clock that is unlawful and you should be paid for the time. I recommend you consider pursuing that if it's more than 15 minutes each night
