Sunnyside, NY asked in Landlord - Tenant for New York

Q: What is considered a 'timely manner' for a landlord to address a severe cockroach infestation?

We have several unresolved issues in our apartment. We made notice of a leak in our kitchen December 2016 and January 2017, the leak was repaired in February 2017 but the damage to our apartment has never been repaired. We are now experiencing a roach infestation that is originating from the leak (August 2017). We asked for an exterminator over the summer and no one ever came the day they were scheduled. We notified them Sunday of the severity of the situation, our super came and documented everything and we were told an exterminator would come and the management company would repair the damage. It is now Tuesday and we have not heard from anyone, nor have they returned emails or phone calls. What is considered a reasonable amount of time for them to resolve the problem in this situation? The infestation is severe enough (5-10 killed during the daytime) that we are uncomfortable preparing food.

A: You may need to ask him to pay for reasonable accommodations while he deals with the problem. This should typically be handled within a few days at most.
