Shakopee, MN asked in Divorce for Minnesota

Q: Quick and easy uncontested divorce in MN - can the paperwork be done online?

My husband and I want to file a joint petition for divorce in MN, uncontested. Both of us just want to go our separate ways with our own debt and property. We don't want anything from each other. He received a house before our marriage (from his mother), so he will keep the house, and I already moved out over a year ago. We want a quick and easy divorce, without lawyers if possible, since we agree on everything and just want to move on with our lives without more debt, court dates, and hassle. Would it be possible to complete one of those "online" document preparation divorces, and file the paperwork jointly at a Hennepin Co. courthouse, or do we have to itemize everything since our debts and property aren't 100% equal (he has his debts and property, I have mine)?

A: I highly suggest avoiding online filing companies. Many attorneys charge a low fee for uncontested divorce cases. Many of us represent clients throughout the region in uncontested matters. One of you retains the attorney to help with the filing. Although the attorney only represents that client, the attorney's assistance guarantees that the filing has been done correctly.
