Pompano Beach, FL asked in Consumer Law and Small Claims for Florida

Q: Power outages caused short in expensive appliances which now need repair. Who should have to pay?

Purchased a brand new whirlpool oven from a local big box store for $1,600 in 2015 and it was built in 2015. It is now out of warranty (2 1/2 years old) and a relay board is now bad as of today. I spoke to a whirlpool service rep and they said even a short power outage can cause this. Can I send the repair bill to our electric company to pay since we’ve been having power outages and most recent yesterday and the oven was working fine two days ago? It’s a $350 part and a $98 fee JUST for the service man to walk in the door.

A: Most likely no or rather I doubt that the electric company will agree to pay for anything. I guess that you can always try but if they either take no action or refuse the cost of trying to prove they are liable is likely more costly than the repair itself.

Sorry for you situation and good luck.
