Q: Is my landlord responsible for pest control?

My dog caught a rat in the backyard. Since then theres poison in bait stations along with live trap in the backyard. We have mice inside the home with poison and traps. I feel like as a tenant Ive done everything I can do.

A: Review your lease. Does it say who pays for pest control? If not, report it to your local health department or building department. They might take some action. If not, then you can advise the landlord in writing of the problem, and begin paying your rent on time each month into escrow with your local court, and the court will hold a hearing to find out what landlord is doing, or if it is landlord's responsibility. Check with your court for the process.
