Schaumburg, IL asked in Divorce for Illinois

Q: What rules apply to translating a French divorce decree? (lived in France with wife, divorced there, now live in IL.

My wife and I were married in Virginia in 2001 and immediately moved to (her native) Paris. I returned to Illinois in 2015 and our divorce was officialized in Paris in October 2017. I have now received the divorce decree, in French, and need to have it translated. This document is all I have, and all that I will receive, and I am not sure if it will satisfy Illinois requirements (notably, for a mortgage loan application). Thanks for your help!

A: You'll have to hire a translator, which should not be difficult or costly. The French Judgment is valid here. However, different lenders have different requirements. You may have to get the Judgment certified, if it isn't already.
