Redondo Beach, CA asked in Animal / Dog Law for California

Q: will having vet bills prove my ownership of a dog ?

My exboyfriend adopted a dog from an animal shelter since the beginning I have provided everything for the dog including food, vet visits, medication costs. I have all receipts and the dog is under my name at the vet office. Three months ago he was kicked out of his house and asked me to take the dog and I have had her for 3 months living with me. Now that we broke up he wants the dog back yet still has no where to live and cannot provide financially for the dog for medication, food, etc. Do I have a case for ownership of the dog?

A: If he gave the dog to you, it is yours. If you just volunteered to absorb these expenses for your boyfriend while he was going through a tough time, the dog is his.
