Philadelphia, PA asked in Family Law and Juvenile Law for Ohio

Q: My niece is 17 years old and lives with so much mental and emotional abuse! She wants out. What can we do?

I am willing to do anything to help her. She is a senior in high school with straight A’s, she has a job, she just accepted to a collage. She’s an amazing kid. But can’t handle the mental and emotional absuse from her mother and step father anymore. I don’t want her to feel like there’s no way out and give up on everything! What can we do?

A: You could talk to her parents about the situation since you are a family member. It would not seem advisable to make her change schools with only a few months remaining in her senior year. When she is 18, she is no longer a minor, and can then make her own decisions. Any court action would not be completed before she reaches 18. So she will have to find support from other family members, school counselor, teachers, or other concerned adults willing to encourage her and speak to her parents.
