San Diego, CA asked in Civil Rights for California

Q: Someone filed a false harassment police report against me, what are my options ?

My sister and brother-in law are going through some rough patches in their marriage. Out of the blue someone named XYZ (I think it’s the brother-in law's friend, though not sure) filed a harassment case against me in NYPD (I live in California) that I’m calling her and harassing her. I don’t even know that person. I haven’t talked to her ever. So this is a completely false police report on me. I got a call from NYPD detective saying that this XYZ person has filed a harassment case against me and the detective wants me to stop calling her. I said him, I never called her nor I know her. I live in California. Also the detective said he will trace my calls.

What should I do ? Should I file a report in my local county that someone filed a false claim against me or should I hire a lawyer ? What will happen next ? Please advise ?

Thanks

A: New York law doesn't reach California. If your phone number records show no calls to NY, then you should have nothing to worry about.
