Los Angeles, CA asked in Domestic Violence for California

Q: Pressed charges against my ex for domestic violence. How can I get charges dropped?

I barged into his house and caught him cheating on me. He put his hands on me to get me out of the house but didn't hurt me. He's never been abusive toward me. He called the police on me and they listed me as the victim. I brought documents to the detective to paint a picture of him being an aggressor toward women. In his journal he wrote about incidents of his past where he "put his hands on" ex girlfriends, stole from them, etc. He was also using drugs during this time, had been arrested, in jail etc. He is not this type of person now and I brought these documents to paint a picture but they don't accurately tell the story of who he is now. I don't justify his actions of putting his hands on me, but he was acting out in anger after I barged in. I don't want to deal with this court case anymore. He isn't coming after me or trying to hurt me. I am not a victim of domestic violence. I just want this to be over and move on with my life. How do I get charges dropped?

A: once you make a complaint and a case is filed it becomes challenging to get charges dropped.

the People of the State of California are the victim and you are a wit.

you should probably talk to his lawyer to explain what you want to do or hire a lawyer for yourself who could talk to his lawyer.

your lawyer can advise the DA that you are not going to testify and that would go a long way towards dropping charges.
