Lafayette, LA asked in Child Support for Louisiana

Q: Child Support Modification?

In 2013 a child support award has been given to my exwife, along with no right for me to claim our child for tax purposes every year. In addition to the award, private schooling, after school care, and health insurance were added to the basic childsupport order. At present, our child is no longer in private school, is on medicaid, and no longer needs after school care, which has been the case for the last few years. So basically ive been paying for something that isnt needed anymore. Also in 2013, the adjusted gross income was around $10000 and 45/55% mother father. Now it is around $6000-$7000 40/60% mother father, and my income has not changed. Is it reasonable to seek a child support modification and seek a right to claim my child bi-yearly for tax purposes. Side note, I have never missed any child support payments

A: Yes, it is certainly reasonable to see whether a child support modification is warranted. If there is at least a 20% change in circumstances, the court will modify the child support award.
