Lake Villa, IL asked in Traffic Tickets for Illinois

Q: What happens when you pay a seatbelt ticket late?

I got the seatbelt ticket on Jan 17. I left it in the glove compartment and forgot about it (bad move, I know). The ticket said I had by Feb 5 to pay it. I paid the ticket on Feb 7, but I received a letter in the mail saying I failed to pay the ticket. This letter was dated Feb 6. The letter says “the Secretary of State has been notified to prohibit the renewal, reissue, or reinstatement of your drivers license or privileges on the 46th day following the date shown in box 5.” I’m not sure what this means since my license wasn’t revoked or suspended. Do I have to go to court? Is my license now suspended?

A: I would call the clerk. Your payment and their letter probably crossed. If so ask them to notify Secretary of State to remove the NP45 from your record.

Secretary of State will have an internal stop on your record. As thr letter states this will prevent you from renewing your drivers license or if you were revoked before this, would’ve prevented them from reinstating your license.

217 558-6258 is the automated system to check the status of your drivers license.
