Whittier, CA asked in Personal Injury, Health Care Law and Medical Malpractice for California

Q: Is it too late to do something else about it?

Um I got my first weave done on December 8th (Friday morning) and the first couple of days felt like my head was on fire and I couldn’t sleep, I had to take 1600mg of ibuprofen to be able to sleep, the weeks that followed were irritating because of how much it itched, then on December 18th I took it off because I couldn’t take it, on my head was pus and a horrible smell, I went to the emergency twice that week and was told that I had impetigo which is contagious, when I undid the braid and chopped of MY hair, the top of my head and hair were eaten away, the specialist I was sent to says that I was basically scalped.

My mom got recommended to an African American male lawyer and not to be mean, he’s not used these kinds of cases, he told my mom that she waited to long for further actions to be done but I don’t believe that.

Contact the Board of Cosmetology and file a complaint. http://www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/enforcement/complaint.shtml

Impetigo is a bacterial infection. If you got it at a beauty salon, there should be other customers who were infected there, too. These government board investigations might be able to locate the others, which would make your case stronger. Right now, what is the proof that the weave was the source of the infection?

Take photos of the damage to your scalp and follow up with a dermatologist. S/he might also be able to verify the source of the infection. Have an attorney write to the beauty salon and ask for the name of its insurer and the policy number.

A: No, it's not too late. The question is whether you had impitago before or whether is came from the salon or stylist. That needs to be determined before you proceed with litigation. Reporting the incident to the health dept should result in the kind of investigation you need
