Virginia Beach, VA asked in Landlord - Tenant and Real Estate Law for Virginia

Q: Is there anyway to check and see if my landlord has insurance to cover nature caused property damage?

We are in the middle of a huge windstorm where the shed door was torn off the shed. The property management company says that I am responsible for paying for the damages. But other people I've talked to says that they should have insurance that covers it. Also I am due to be moving out of the place in just under 2 weeks. I wanna make sure this isn't some kind of plan to get me to pay for something just before I leave

A: Review your lease. If you don’t know how, retain counsel. It isn’t a big job.

A: The tenant's obligations for repairs are contained in the written and signed lease agreement. If this situation is not covered or there is some provisions that relates to property damage insurance, then either will apply to the tenant's obligations.
