West Palm Beach, FL asked in Copyright and Patents (Intellectual Property)

Q: Is it copying if I didn't know?

I have a business idea for a blog that I've been trying to get off the ground. I just came across a similar (not 100% but in the same vein) blog. I am considering contacting them to see if I could purchase the existing business, but I don't want to if it might imply that I'm copying the business should the sale not work out.

Edit: the name for my business was a shortened version of the name of the other business (mine is one word, theirs is four words and includes mine). I assume that is different enough?

A: It is not illegal to copy a business idea. Your business model could be 100% identical and it would be fine. You just cannot copy the articles on the other blog or use the same name as the other business.
