Pompano Beach, FL asked in Family Law, Immigration Law and Child Support for Florida

Q: I am Canadian and pregnant by a US Citizen. Currently still in the US and I need to know what my rights are.

The father and I were dating for several months. When I told him I was pregnant, he told me he wanted nothing to do with me or the child. He also lied to me and said he had a vasectomy which he didn't and he's also married. I can't work due to my status. How do I know if I am still legal or illegal?. I need to know my options. The father is aware that he will be paying child support. Please help!

A: Getting pregnant does not change your immigration status. You have no rights against the father until the child is born, at which point you will need to file a petition for paternity to collect child support. You need to speak with an immigration lawyer about your status.
