Q: Over 10,000 dollars worth of precious metals and I plan on going back to the United States. I'm the military overseas.

Hello, I am currently stationed overseas in Germany with the US Military. I have over 10,000 dollars worth of precious metal assets. I'm putting them in my carry on luggage to travel back to the United States. What do I need so I do not get held up by Custom Authorities? Are there any special cases or waivers for US Military Members?

A: It probably doesn’t require a report unless it is cash equivalent, including bullion. But, all you need to do as far as CBP cares is declare it. There is no duty, so why wouldn’t you declare it anyway to avoid confusion. If you transport more than $10,000, at once or in a pattern of shipments, without declaring it, it is subject to seizure and you can be charged with a Federal crime. If you are importing certain non-monetary items, like gifts and jewelry, they may be subject to normal duties. But, the $10,000 rule everyone knows has nothing to do with duties. Think Terrorist or Drug interdiction.
