Clarksville, MD asked in Employment Law for Maryland

Q: I am a physician that is paid hourly but has a guaranteed minimum amount of hours that I am paid for.

I am supposed to be paid for those hours whether worked or not. A new company took over and said this is against labor laws. We were promised our contracts would remain unchanged. Is this correct, that it is against labor laws?

A: While you should certainly consult an employment lawyer, I am aware of no law that would disallow a contract provision of the type you describe. It sounds as though the new owner does not like the minimum base compensation they are bound to pay under the employment contracts they purchased—and are bound to comply with— along with the purchase of the business. Stick to your guns and demand they honor their end of the bargain.
