Mount Holly, NJ asked in Criminal Law, Immigration Law and Traffic Tickets for New Jersey

Q: How long can I use my International Driver's license/permit to drive legally in the US now that I'm a resident of NJ?

Hi. I am a Legal Permanent Resident with Green Card and Social Security Card. I am a resident of New Jersey since October, 2017. I possess a valid Driver's License from my country the Philippines. I also possess a valid International Driver's permit. Does my International Driver's permit allow me to drive in the US for up to one year without getting a NJ Driver's License?

A: It depends, In general you can only use your international license for 60 days, but many of those are not legal either to use as the ones sold over the internet are fakes.

A: Yes. Which visa is right for you will depend on your role in the business and other factors. We strongly recommend that your US partner discuss options with an immigration attorney.

A: You will need to check with New Jersey state law. In general, states require an in-state license if you have a license in that state. From an immigration point of view, there is no issue, since USCIS has no jurisdiction over driver’s licenses.
