North Ridgeville, OH asked in Landlord - Tenant for Ohio

Q: can I be evicted from home purchased for us with inheritance money 6 years ago, his dad, says non payment of rent.

My husband and I are married for 11 years, we have 2 kids, 1 is still a minor, 6 years ago we were going to purchase a home, his dad says dont buy that, cuz I bought you the house next door to me. I was forced to move there with my family. His dad says pay me $500 a month like you were paying and the house ill sign over to ya after I transfer the land. In 2015 almost 2016, my husband could no longer work, then I lost my job and we had no income. we stopped paying the $500 because we couldn't but technically we owned the house, his father didnt owe on it. It was partly purchased with my husbands inheritance money from his grandmothers estate. Now that I am disliked by his father I am being evicted through courts and sued for rent. Just myself being asked to vacate a home I live in with my family.

A: If your father-in-law's name is on the deed as the sole owner of the house, then he can evict you. Contracts regarding sale and purchase of real estate typically must be in writing. Without that, it makes it much more difficult to claim any rights. Your husband might have some kind of claim if his money was used to purchase the house. But that might not stop the eviction.
