Los Angeles, CA asked in Landlord - Tenant for California

Q: This morning my landlord came and brought in an inspector. She did not give any notice and demanded to come in.

I told her it was not a convenient time because my daughters were sleeping in the room. My daughters were not dressed appropriately as they were sleeping and did not want a strange man to come in and take pictures of the unit. However she forced her way in and told the men it was ok. I kinda had to fight my way and say no once again. I felt harrassed and threatened especially because my underage daughters were about to be seen naked by these men. I put my foot down and did not allow for them to make it into my daughters room. The “inspector” then asked for me to take the pictures of the room myself. I am so stressed/ saddened and cannot believe the lack of professionalism. What can I do in this case? ( appropriate steps) Please and Thank you

A: The landlord has a right to inspect but that does not give him the right to barge into your house without notification and terrorize you and your minor children. Next time, call the police in their presence and file a complaint for home invasion and assault and if they touch you, file a complaint for battery. Also, have a lawyer file a restraining order if they are always doing this without your consent. Tenants in California have rights and your rights are statutory and are also spelled out in your lease. Best of luck.
