Washington, PA asked in Real Estate Law for Pennsylvania

Q: I received a notice that my rent to was increase. Can I end my lease now by not agreeing to the increase?

I am in Pennsylvania. I received a notice that my rent to was increase. I saw this letter one month before my lease ends (August 31). They may have sent it earlier but I did not receive it. I am supposed to give 60 days notice before the end of the lease if I plan to move. Can I end my lease now by not agreeing to the increase? The rent increase (and updated lease) had a notice to mail back by August 15. I am on a one year lease. I have had major issues with the AC unit but that is a different story. I have found a new place and plan to sign the new lease tomorrow. Is there anything I should be worried about?

A: A lawyer would have to meet with you and review your current lease to give you an accurate answer to your question.

I suggest that you start by contacting the current landlord to see if it will agree to having you terminate the lease. If not, you would be best advised to consult a lawyer before signing a new lease.

A: Read your lease it will provide how and when you can get out of the lease. You are also correct that you must give notice in the time period prescribed. The lease probably provides for rent increases. Best of luck.
