Jacksonville, FL asked in Family Law and Child Custody for Georgia

Q: I'm afraid that if I don't keep the facade of a relationship with my sons mother, she'll keep him from me. What do I do

I found out that I have a 2 year old son in March and due to a past incident with my first child dying, I'm afraid that if I don't do as she wants, I'll only get to see him 6 hours out of each month or she will harm him. Right now I get him as long as I want, but I'm not in a position to get a lawyer to help me make sure nothing bad will happen to him when I tell her I do not want to be with her and all I'll have to do is pay child support for him. I'm at a loss and it's putting other relationships I have in jeapordy.

A: Have you taken steps to legitimize your child? Without doing that you will have no legal rights to the child and she can do as she sees fit. She can keep you from ever seeing him if that's her choice. In order to protect your interest in being able to see the child you need to first go through the legitimization process. That will give you legal rights to your child. Then you can get court ordered visitation. You should consult with an attorney who can help you plan the proper course of action. -Homer P. A: The only way to protect your rights to your son are to file a legitimation action with the courts. Until you do so, you have no rights to custody or visitation and will be at her mercy as to when you can spend time with your son.
