Evanston, IL asked in Traffic Tickets for Illinois

Q: I was stopped driving on a suspended license because of 10 unpaid parking tickets. I cannot pay, what are my options?

I was unaware that my DL was suspended and being unemployed makes it difficult to begin the process of the hefty payment plan. Can I be jailed even though I'm currently unemployed? What can I do or make the judge not throw the book at me? Thank you, any information is useful.

A: You are charged with a Class A Misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to 364 days in jail and up to $2,500.00 in fines not including mandatory fees and costs. Also, depending on why and how many priors you have, you could be looking at a minimum required sentence of time in jail or community service. I suggest showing up to court and asking the Judge to appoint the Public Defender to your case and get time to clear your license.
