Stow, OH asked in Car Accidents for Ohio

Q: I was involved in a 3 car rear ending. I hit the car in front of me because the car in front of him stopped fast.

The 2nd car driver said the first car stopped fast. Could there be any liability for the first driver if there was no apparent reason for him to quickly stop?

A: The law says you have to maintain an assured clear distance ahead of your vehicle so that you can stop in case the driver(s) in front of you do. It does not say you cannot stop suddenly. Unless you could show that the first car pulled out in front of traffic when it wasn't clear, the liability is going to be on the two following drivers.
