Pittsburgh, PA asked in Real Estate Law and Civil Litigation for Pennsylvania

Q: My long term ex-boyfriend illegally kicked me out of the joint residence that we owned.

I was not on the deed but can show that I paid 50% of all expenses, including the mortgage and down payment for the house. He abused me for 10 years off an on, mostly mentally, but also physically at times. I have an attorney, but she is costing me an arm and a leg and not doing anything. I need to find an attorney that will go after him for my share of the house, my personal property, and possibly damages to my person. My knee is going to be ruined for life thanks to his abuse. Not to mention the mental damage. How do I go about finding a decent attorney to file a suit against him?

A: Contact your local Lawyer Referral Service to get matched up with an attorney. The Allegheny County Bar Association almost surely has one, or can at least point you in the right direction.

As for "your share of the house," I think you'll be hard pressed to recover anything since you two were not married. But you may be entitled to other damages, so do continue on! Best of luck to you.
