Q: There was a fire in the county jail and we breathed smoke for 2hrs and they wouldn't evacuate us. Can I sue?

The jail caught on fire and we breathed smoke for 2hrs and they refused to evacuate us. I was taken to 2 different hospitals and treated for smoke inhalation. The fire alarm didn't work and neither did the sprinkler system and sailors didn't have a evacuation plan.

A: While people can file a lawsuit for many reasons, the more pressing question is whether a case would probably be successful. To get a better idea here, you should consult with an attorney who could examine all the facts and your injuries in greater detail.

A: You would only have a case if you had injuries. An attoney will only take a case where the injuries are more than minor injuries. You can check with the prison unit of the Civil Liberties Union of your state, but don't be shocked if they tell you it's not a case that warrants their involvement.
