Q: can someone take my cats when I'm out of town and abandon them at a trash dump?

My husband and I have 6 cats-2 adults and 4 kittens. We are in Florida and have been gone for 2 weeks. Our pets are in my husband's step dad's home where no one but my husband and I live when we are in Louisiana. We leave a 13 pound bag of food and 3 gallons of water out for them and someone to check on them 3 times a week. Can his step dad or his step grandparents take them to a trash dump and abandon them there with NO food, NO shelter and NO one to check on them and possibly, for them to get ran over (as his step dad did with my husband's puppies when he was 16)? We want our cats and plan to go back as soon as we can to get them, in the next week or two. We arranged someone to feed, water and be with them but his step family is being difficult and telling us we have to get them immediately (we are 15 hours away one way and living in our car to save up money for an apartment) or he is taking them to the dump. He said he isn't going out of his way to take them anywhere else.

A: You can't leave your pets in someone else's home if they don't want them there. You need to come home immediately and take the 6 felines to the Humane Society since you currently can't care for them. By law you can only have 5 cats in a home. Cats need to be neutered and given shots annually.
