Baton Rouge, LA asked in Animal / Dog Law for Louisiana

Q: Can I legally keep my mother's dog, since she allows her husband to abuse the dog?

My mother is currently living with his sister because shes been evicted for the 4th time in the last couple of years. The dog has been staying with me the last two weeks and she is happy here with our pack. The dog is 8 and has been to the vet 2x in her entire life, Is locked in her kennel at all times except for potty breaks, and she is treated like an object not a living creature by her husband. I dont want to give the poor dog back into that hell, is there anything i can do legally if she fights me on this?

A: Get the old Vet record to prove neglect. Is the dog a purebred or mutt? If a mutt, the worst she can charge you with is theft of $1.25. If a pure bred but spayed, also no monetary value. Tell her if she tries to accuse you of theft, then you will file a criminal charge of neglect.
