Asked in Immigration Law for New York

Q: What happens if I change my citizenship and hence passport while I have an F1 Visa?

I am interested in coming to the U.S. next fall and studying CS with Finance. I am currently a citizen of India and would like to get a job in the US and move there after studying. The issue is that after the 12/27 months OPT and 3+3 years maximum H1B, I don't see how I could get an EB2/EB3 because of how long the waiting times are for India. Instead of going the EB5 route, I intend on investing in St Lucia (Due to the cheaper cost) and getting citizenship from there. This, I hope, should help me with applying for EB2/EB3 since St Lucia won't have a backlog for the applications.

My concern is, what happens to my F1 visa when I switch my citizenship?

P.S.- India doesn't allow dual citizenship and I'll need to return my Indian passport and renounce my Indian citizenship when I take the St Lucian passport.

A: It is likely you will have to reapply based on your new citizenship.
